Sounds like your talking about the difference between
Hemerocallis-daylilies and Lilium-the "true" lily types.  Daylilies
have long grass like foliage and the blossoms remain open only one day.
Lilium have the tall stalks with all the leaves on them and the blossoms
usually last a number of days, the Easter Lily type.  From what I've
seen there is a great deal more variety among the daylilies, as far as
flower color, pattern, length of bloom etc.
