Another bio (was:Re: ? about daylily-open)

Hi, everyone -- I've also been disappointed about the lack of discussion
on daylilies -- have tried a couple of posts in order to start a
discussion, but not much response.

So, a bio: I'm a 10-year gardener in the middle of Chicago's northeast
side, 5 blocks from Lake Michigan and one block from Wrigley Field (the
Chicago Cubs park). We have two city lots with about 2000 S.F. of space
divided among a dozen or so beds. I have about 2 dozen varieties of
daylilies (not nearly enough, but space is running out!) We generally
have cold winters and hot humid summers (this one has been very hot,
with little rain); of course this past winter was very mild and put us
probably in zone 7 or even 8 instead of 5 or 6 -- I had a tuberous
begonia survive and regrow this year!

My favorites include Holy Joy (beautiful soft peach with chartreuse
throat, heavy substance, about 30 inches tall, 4 to 5 inch blooms, one
of the earliest to bloom, just finishing now); Little Wine Cup, a dark
miniature that keeps sending up new scapes all summer; Green Flutter, a
smallish yellow (about 28 inches) with green overtones, lots of buds;
Singing Sixteen, a gorgeous deep coral pink with lighter midribs and
fragrant; and Real Wind, a light clear orange with rose eyezone. Many
yellows (including Hyperion, Star Dream, Yellowstone, Happy Returns, and
the flava variety).

I like to use daylilies as specimens among other perennial plantings and
love experimenting with plant combinations. Do any of you share this
passion? I'd love to hear about some of your favorite combos. I'd also
be interested in hearing about your favorite cultural practices,
fertilizers, etc. Haven't tried any from seed yet (space, again) but
I get lots of pods and am tempted.

Thanks to everyone for getting this going.

Anne - Chicago
