I interviewed a woman who is sight-impaired and gardens. She told me that
most sight-impaired people stick to container gardening, but she didn't see
the necessity. She wears thin-soled shoes, and has different-textured
approaches to her garden beds that she can feel with her feet. She plants
seeds, using her first knuckle as a depth finder, but prefers to set out
seedlings. She can tell the difference between weeds and plants by feel.
She also has a string to guide her along a row. I think her husband has to
help out if there's an insect invasion, but she's pretty self-sufficient.
She doesn't let her guide dog or guide puppy in training in the garden area
with her because they're rather destructive. Margaret
