Hi Maryann,
I have a suggestion for your strawberry jars. The first couple of years
I had them I had trouble watering them very well. Now I have a new
system. I cut a piece of 2" PVC pipe (plastic plumbing pipe) so it
sticks a couple of inches above the planned soil level. Drill tiny
holes (1/8 inch works well) all up and down the length of the pipe. I
center this in the middle of the pot and fill all around it with soil
being sure to leave no air pockets. Put about three inches of soil into
the pipe to seal off the bottom end. Then after you have planted the
strawberries all you have to do to water them is fill up the pipe. It
will seep out into the soil thru the holes you drilled. Good luck, I
hope they do well for you.
I live in Seattle, WA and have several beds of flowers and vegetables.
I am out of space till my husband decides to give up more lawn. For
this coming season, I have rented a 20 x 40 foot plot on city land. It
has been a corral on a farm for years so the soil should be very good.
I have a Little Sister thru the Big Sister program and we are doing this
together. I hope her enthusiasm lasts thru the growing season. The
plot is near her home so her family can easily enjoy the produce. She
is 12 years old.
I am fortunate to have no physical disabilities at this time but checked
out the enabled gardener site for my Mother-in-law. She loves to garden
but can't do too much. I did construct a small raised box for her last
year. She can sit or stand and tend to it. It is about 2 x 4 feet and
shallow. I may make it a little deeper this year so things will grow
better. She grew some very nice flowers in it last year.
Time for me to get busy. I hope my suggestion will be helpful.
Shay
