Gosh...I don't know another list quite like this one ... and at least for
Oregonians like me, the gardening season is coming to a halt for 1998.
I'm really concerned about food distribution being brought to a standstill as
the result of computers going down at different places on and after January 1,
2001. I'm sure you all have heard something about how most computers' date
functions don't go beyond December 31, 1999. In fact they fall back to
1900, which could tangle things pretty badly. Probably the bigger corporations
will fix their computers in time, but there's a vast worldwide network of
computers, many of them operating in small businesses in this country and
others, where there isn't the money to upgrade, or the business owners are just
too swamped with other concerns and figure the y2k bug, as it's being called,
is not going to affect them.
We don't really know what's going to happen, but it sure would hurt to have a
store of food from our own gardens JUST IN CASE.
And this list, which focusses on the different needs of people with
disabilities, as far as I know, is one of a kind. I've gotten a lot of good
ideas here on how to plant, nurture, and harvest my raised garden. I'd also
like to gather some ideas on preserving what I grow. As a polio survivor, I
can't do too much fancy stuff like canning, but maybe someone out there has
figured out a way to do something from a wheelchair, with weak arms.
Couldn't we talk about this??? ...AMARIS
