Amy,

To raise a fig tree from a cutting and a blooming plant from seed, you
must have a lot more patience than I do! I've wanted to start some
sort of houseplant from seed but just haven't gotten around to it. The
closest I've come to propagating a plant is potting spider plant babies
(real challenge, huh?).

"Real world"? Is this because you're in school or because you live
in an apartment? I live in an apartment so I'm pretty limited to
houseplants and containers on the patio. House prices here in
Portland, OR have gone completely insane, so it will be a few years
before we can afford a house, so I satisfy (temporarily) my gardening
urges by keeping up my dad's yard (he's got a black thumb) and
growing what I can in my apartment. I also used my kitchen to
pot my plants. I got tired of laying down newspaper all the time, so
I went to the garden center and bought the biggest plastic pot saucer
I could find and kid's miniature tools, and they work great for repotting
plants and keeping the kitchen clean.

It's on its way!
