Christine:
Have not seen any answers to your questions so am replying.
Are your shamrocks the rhizome kind or the bulb kind? The bulb kind go
dormant in the winter. The kind with thick gnarled roots can be dormant if
you stop watering or they can be kept growing (not so well) in the winter.
I water as soon as the surface of the soil is dry and since I use a soilless
mix I put a pinch of fertilizer in every watering. They need good light
(even some sun) to bloom well and not grow so floppy. They multiply rapidly
so need frequent repotting or splitting up. They make nice summer bedding
plants and some of the bulb kinds are hardy and can be left out over winter.
I'm not sure what your Resurrection Plant and Songof Jamaica are. Thee are
severla plants called Resurrection. If it is Achimenes it is a beautiful
plant which grows from a scaly root like a miniature pine cone. It belongs
to the same family as African violets and blooms for several months with
beautiful flat-faced flowers in almost every color before going dormant.
The rhizomes will stay dormant for about four months before repsrouting. It
is normally summer flowering but if you have a light garden you can bloom it
any time of year by forcing some into dormancy (stop watering) early in the
summer.
They like lots of water (if they dry out they may go dormant) and fertilizer
and a bright window or under fluorescent light. These also make nice
bedding plants.
Hope this helps.
