Re: Philedendron problems

Hi Lily,
Are the spots on the underside of the leaves? If so, it could be scale
insects (or red spider mites, but you would have seen the tiny mites move
under the leaves and they form webs at the base of leaves and joining of
stems). It could also be sun burn if the plant is exposed to direct sun.
Philodendron need lots of light but no sun. My Yucca got some brown spot
burns last year because of burning noon sun. Those are usually brown-black
and dry. If the spots are soft, then it could be overwatering leading to
rot. If that is the case, check the roots and stems for rot and cut off
all rotten parts and spray with fungicide. If none of the above apply,
then check its general care. Brown or black spots on plants are due to
improper care if no pests or viruses are present. The usual are too dry or
too humid air, cold draughts and under or overwatering. Good-luck
Helga
