Many people on the orchid listserv group swear by horticultural
oil for killing scale on their orchids. The most common one is SunSpray
brand's Ultra Fine (Pesticidal Oil), which is becoming more widely
available in nurseries. I also have two recipies of oil sprays which are
a mix of vegetable oil and dish soap. I'll post them to this list soon.
But I have definately read people write about killing scale with
the SunSpray oil. It is no more toxic than Safer's insecticidal soap, but
reportedly much more effective.
Good luck! Let us know how you fare in erradicating this pest.
