Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself as a new member on the list. I guess I
would call myself an "advanced beginner." I just started taking houseplants
seriously this winter when I was going through withdrawal symptoms from my
outdoor garden (mostly woodland, but that's another issue). I have several
African violets (including some cute minis that haven't been very
forthcoming with blooms), streptocarpuses, begonias, the basic tropical
foliage plants, and hoyas, most grown with available light but some (mostly
the AVs and hoyas) supplemented with grow-lights. I was wondering if someone
could identify a large hoya I have. I bought it maybe eight years ago at a
Woolworth's, so it must be something quite common. It has thick 3-inch
dark-green leaves with irregular silver spots; the undersides are slightly
lighter and more yellow. The one time it flowered it produced
brownish-purple clusters that, as far as I can recall, had no smell. I
repotted the plant this winter and moved it into more sun after totally
neglecting it for year after year. (If this has been a child, I'd be in
prison by now.) It has perhaps tripled in size and has all sorts of ropes
dangling about (hitting my husband on the head when he walks into the
bathroom). In the hopes that my husband has not suffered for naught, I'm
wondering when I can expect this hoya to bloom.
I look forward to communicating with you all. Best: Nancy Stedman
