Re: Over-wintering container plants
Dear Lola,
What kind of plants do you plan to overwinter in the containers?
I done various evergreen and deciduous trees in containers here in
Montana, just remember to water your plants during the winter. Likewise
hardy herbaceous perennials overwinter easy in containers. A few bulbs
stuck in the containers works too.
I having seven cast iron horse feeding troughs plants that hang on a
dog kennel with common hardy plants: Lamium, Ferns, Grasses, Hosta,
Campanula. The African Impatiens will of course die at first frost. The
licorice plant and ivies should last well into winter. Take cuttings of
anything you don't want to lose and pot the extra outdoor plants in the
ground. Bring a few cuttings of favorite tender plants indoors.
It would be a shame to only limit your outdoor container plants to the
too few summer months.
Stick some of the chrysanthemums that you grew from cuttings into the
containers and extend the bloom season more.
Best, Vicki
