Several questions here...

I have a few questions about some strange stuff that's going on with a
few of my plants, and would appreciate any advice anyone has.

1) I woke up the other morning to the sound of our cat knocking down
a pot. I ran out into the living room and found a shallow pot of cactus
knocked down onto the floor. In the process of repotting them, I noticed
that one of them has a weird growth on top. I've seen it growing for a
few weeks now but didn't think much of it. I have no idea what kind of
cactus it is, but it's getting a round, fresh growth on top, but the really
weird thing is that this growth has roots! Before, this cactus always
kind of came to a point on top, then this "thing" grew and is putting out
roots. Can I cut it off and pot it after it gets a few more? The original
cactus is quite mushy and seems to be dying.

2) For my anniversary present my husband bought me a nice orchid. I
have no idea what kind it is since the tag was lost at the nursery and
the woman who sold it to him didn't have a clue what it was. I won't even
ask any of you to try to identify it--I've been searching the web for a photo
but no luck, so I'm just going to find out where the nursery gets their orchids
and go ask them. Anyway...it's finished blooming, is getting a new growth
and is putting out a ton of new roots (this nursery is nice but overwaters
mercilessly). The thing is, the new growth has little sticky drops on it,
almost like it's secreting something. Is this a bad sign? None of my other
orchids have ever done this.

3) I'd be forever grateful if someone could tell me a way to keep cats from
digging (and messing!) in pots and planter boxes. I've been gone most
of the weekend and came home to a mess outside my front door that you
wouldn't believe. It just about made me sick to clean it up, plus it just made
me furious that my coleus all got dug up. I seem to remember about 9
months ago someone said that putting gravel down on their indoor pots
helped. Am I remembering rightly? Help! It's really disgusting.
