I haven't found any differences, except that my purse is a lot lighter after
buying the special grow lights :). Height of the tubes varies (love these
definitive answers, don't you?) but usually 12" is a good average.
8 hours a day of fluorescents, if they're pretty much the only light source,
isn't really enough..even low light plants like 12-16. If you have full-sun
plants
you might want to switch their seasons around, since they're growing okay in
winter. (eg slow watering, don't fertilize, in summer, feed and water lots in
winter). Or you could invest in a high intensity discharge light system, but
those are quite expensive.
