Devil's Ivy

I bought one and it lasted only about 2 weeks.  I had it in low light, 
started wilting, watered it alot, started wilting, put it in the south 
window, started wilting, yellow leaves, then I noticed it had these white 
little crusts on them and webs, threw it out.  
I really want one, how can I care for one when I get another one?  Were 
these white things, spider mites?
