Hawaiian ti plant

Hi. I got a fairly large (4-feet-tall) specimen at a very good price, but
I'm not sure it's thriving. I've got it in a large north-facing window, near
a big bowl of water. New quite bright pink leaves are opening, but the lower
leaves are turning brown and dropping off. Is this normal? Thanks in advance,
