I have been growing under cool white fluorescent lights for about 25 years
but reading about the better results from HID lights I bought a 400 watt one
last year for some of my plants that grow a bit rangy under fluorescents.  I
hung it 30" over a table.  Plants directly under it grew stocky but  didn't
flower any better than under fluorescents.  The dealer tells me he now has a
bulb that is better for flowering plants but considering it cost several
hundred dollars and its effective light area was about 3 square feet at the
most, I don't plan to add more of that kind of light.  Also it tended to
scorch any plants that grew up near it while stems and leaves can even touch
fluorescents with little damage

I think I would have better results and much cheaper by doubling the number
of fluorescent tubes to four.

Just my experience.
