I have learned that there are two things that can help trigger a Christmas
cactus to bloom. One is cooler temperatures and one is shorter day length.
I found when I started putting mine in a room that I didn't heat (well it
gets a lot cooler than the rest of the house) and in a room where I don't
turn on any lights so it gets the natural fall light cycle, it blooms
great. I do find that the coolness alone can do it wonderfully. A few
years ago, we had an ice storm and the power was off for three days. The
house got very cool by the time the heat came back on. The Christmas
cactus set bud and flowered a second time that winter!
Anyway, when I treated mine like my other house plants (warm and in lighted
living area), it grew very nicely but never bloomed.
