Those of you who are long time members of this group
may have heard me speak of using these expanded
clay pebbles in container growing. They were introduced
to me by Yvetta Voldan, whom I met here. She sent me a
leca starter kit almost three years ago from Sweden, and
I like it better than other growing media for many plants.
One of the other members (Rick Kimmel) found this
definition at Altavista when searching for hydroculture
on the web:
"Leca is a kiln fired clay product, imported from Germany
for its excellent physical and chemical properties beneficial
to hydroculture. It is made from a special pH stable clay which
is formed in pellets and baked in a kiln at 2100 degrees F. It
allows optimum aeration of the root area, giving plenty of
oxygen to the roots."
I hope you aren't sorry you asked, Joe.
