Perhaps I've missed something, but why would you want to make cuttings, if
you simply want to move the plant to a smaller pot? To pot down, remove the
plant from the old pot, and soak the root ball in a bucket of water. Once
the root ball is thoroughly saturated, swish it around, and most of the
potting materials will come off. Now, you can put the plant into a smaller
pot, without having to restart the roots.
