I have heard that song and dance before about how NOT to pronounce PINUS,
the genus name of pines.
I think that more or less correctly it is pronounced PEE-NOOSE, not PEE-NUS
But, you can say PINE-US if you want to. After Latin is a dead language.
The heck, it is ubiquitous and besides, you find it everywhere. {grin>
Maybe someday we will find an old videotape in some old roman ruins or
something that will straighten all this pronunciation flap out.
