I experimented with container veggies when I lived in an apartment. We faced
almost north and only got sun in the afternoon, but I still had some
success. I had a used whiskey barrel cut in half, plus several pots and
window boxes. Sunflowers make good supports for climbing plants. Scarlet
runner beans attract hummingbirds (and are a very healthy veggy). My dad has
acres of farmland, but grows his tomatoes in a bucket at the back door. My
father in law also has a farm, and grows potatoes in a half barrel. My
friend grows lettuce in a window box, and took the entire thing with her
when she want camping once. Herbs are also great. I also had an arch of
morning glories - a single strand of bailer twine is plenty for them to
climb, then they climb each other. Another friend grows cucumbers up a
fence. Once I saw a pumpkin vine trained up the side of a house and a giant
pumpkin growing on the roof.
