One of my three present cats really gnawed on a Cattleya pseudobulb. I
think it was more of a jaw exercise than a dietary problem. She didn't
seem to want to swallow anything, just chew.
One cat I had who is no longer with us, was so savage with the orchids that
I had to have a carpenter come in and build a stud wall in the basement
which I covered with chicken wire, to cage off the plants.
I've talked to another lady who grows her orchids right out in the open and
she also believes that her cat just needs to chew on something with a
certain texture.
And you never know what's going to appeal to them at any time. One female
cat staying at my Mom's showed no sign of interest until the day she went
in the plant room and chomped thru the four flower stems of a
Paphiopedilum venustum - the first and last time the poor plant ever tried
to bloom.
