You asked what's in bloom now.
For some reason, this is a good moment for my gesneriads. I grew an
African violet and a streptocarpus from leaves two people gave me, and now I
finally know what the flowers look like. The strep turns out to be a lovely
blue flower with a deep yellow throat. The AV is much less interesting:
ruffled double flowers that were supposed to be yellow but instead look like
dishwater. I think I waited over a year for that AV leaf to turn into a
flowering plant, and maybe nine months on the strep! (Patience is generally
not my strong point.)
I have some terrific mini AVs that are in full bloom right now. I have so
little space that I want to devote my energies to more miniatures. I already
have some mini hoyas that have yet to bloom, a "compact" strep that has
beautiful white flowers, and am considering getting some dwarf rex begonias.
Does anyone know of any other kinds of minis that would fit a moderate- to
low-light situation?
Also, has anyone made any New Year's gardening resolutions? I've resolved
to mist all my tropical plants twice a day, though I'm still not convinced
this does anything.
Happy New Year!
