There are necessary physiological processes that occur in plants in the
absence of light. Although they may benefit from an extended daylength
(especially in winter) if they are day neutral, all light would be as bad
as all dark..The optimum depends on the plants, but I grow my day neutrals
under 14-16 hr in the winter.
