Amaryllis and Aquarium Water

Kathleen (Meistrell) and myself both grow a lot of Amaryllis. Her advice
and the excellent little treatise posted by Keith should enable anyone
here to grow award winning plants. One small detail has been overlooked
however. The initial watering that brings the bulb out of dormancy is very
critical. The young lady who is getting leaves but no bloom might have
overwatered too soon. Once you have soaked the bulb once, do not water
again until the bloomstalk is on its way. If the plant receives more than
that it will not bloom but send up leaves. It is not unheard of for the
bloomstalk to come up later surrounded by leaves but most of us are used
to seeing "naked blooms".

Aquarium water makes a nice base for adding other nutrients to, but in a
well maintained tank will be a much too dilute source of nitrogen to
satisfy hungry feeders like Amaryliss. Orchids might benefit as they are
used to very, very dilute concentrations of nutrients.
