Hi Barb,
It helps if you let us know your gardening zone when mentioning growing
plants outdoors. Indoors, it doesn't make so much of a difference.
Container gardening of vegetables is quite effective. You can control your
soil composition and light. And, there are quite a few varieties of veggies
in bush form that do well in containers. Good Luck.
