I mainly do container gardening since I live in an apartment, though
I haven't tried vegetables.  I've read that tomatoes do really well on
patios if you have a nice hot exposure (peppers too).  The only 
advice I have is that no matter what you end up growing, make sure
you water and feed regularly since containers dry out so easily (it
takes me half an hour every morning in the summer to water all my
containers).  Herbs should also do well in containers.
