My Dad grows tomatoes in a bucket on the back step. He has 70 acres of farm land, but still keeps the tomatoes at the back door. The grow great there - several ripen every day. It's just a single plant in a plastic 10 litre bucket. The bucket has a hole in the bottom and Dad just couldn't throw it out. As someone else already pointed out, he has to water and fertalize it regularly (well, Mom does that part, Dad just says the plant is his).
A friend of mine grows lettuce in a plastic window box. They were going camping, and she asked her husband to get some lettuce - he put the whole container in the car. She had fresh lettuce all summer. I believe it was leaf lettuce.
I have tried herbs in the house, but they didn't get enough light, got leggy, and attracted fungas gnats.
My husband's Dad grows his potatoes in an old whisky barrel. (He's another person with plenty of farmland that gardens in containers by the house). In the spring he puts in a layer of dirt and potatoes, then keeps adding dirt and more potatoes the rest of the summer - the barrel is full of potatoes by the end of the summer.
Apparently carrots and other root vegitables grow well in a container - you know exactly how deep the soil is loosened up and that there are no rocks.
Heather, gardening in Canada with a very late spring.
