Summer?

Hi All,

        The list is so quiet, I can only assume that you're all
enjoying summer and dealing with the weeds outside, or sitting by your
pools, or holidaying by the beach :-).  Lucky people... But some of us had
our summer a week ago and spoilt it by getting the sun-lounger out -
remember?  Well, the sun still hasn't forgiven me and yesterday the first
of the Spring Bulb catalogues arrived, just to reassure me that Autumn is
only around the corner!

        I put all my Christmas cacti outside for their breath of fresh
air last week as well, since then we've had highest temperatures of about
60' and lowest of 38'...poor things!  If there is no improvement, I shall
have to rescue them I suppose, or else the yellow ones won't be flowering
yellow!  They need a minimum low of 68' during bud formation, or else the
flowers lose their yellow...

        At least I can enjoy my AVs, Abultions and Oleanders, they are
all blooming like crazy, really cheerful on a dull day.  The flowering
plants seem to respond very well to the extra long daylight this time of
year - only about 4 hours of darkness roundabout mid-summer.  About AVs, I
asked this once before and got no replies, has anyone seen their single
varieties put out extra petals when they first start flowering in the
spring?  A pure white single I have has now gone one better and has blooms
inside blooms (rather like the primrose 'Hose-in-Hose), it looked as though
a seed head was forming, but instead the stamens turned into another
flower, one bloom has 3 of these smaller blossoms inside, rather special!
