Greetings Fellow Plant enthusiasts,
I have nearly ten species and varieties of the genus Hoya, and
really enjoy them I have bloomed only two or three of the ten, sinc I
have only been growing them a little over a year, but have two or three
more in bud right now, some for my first time. A couple of the mail order
nurseries which sell hoyas also sell a couple of plants from the related
genus Dischidia (also in the family Asclepidaceae, the milkweed family).
I saw a photo of one in a book featuring rainforests in tropical
Asia, read a description in a plant book, and decided to order one. I
ordered Dischidia rafflesiana (no doubt named for the Indonesian plant
with the world's largest individual flowers).
If anyone has grown this plant and has advice on growing it, or
can even tell me to grow it the same as a hoya, I'd appreciate hearing
from them. I looked in a few back issues of The Hoyan, but haven't had a
chance to seach it and other sources thoroughly yet. I did find in a new
plant book I bought, titled _The Plant Book: A portable dictionary of
higher plants_. Below I've included that entry.
Take care,
Keith Dabney
"Dischidia: 80 spp. Epiphytes with adventious roots and with fleshy
wax-covered lvs. D. rafflesiana (India to Austr.) also has pitcher-shaped
lvs. c. 10 cm deep, into each of which an adventioutious root grows from
stem or petiole nr. it; detritus, largely collected by ants, accumulates
in pitchers as does rainwater thus made available to roots".
Neat-sounding, huh? I copied this down a couple of months ago, and then
just coincidentally ordered this exact species which the author mentions.
