Greetings from Iowa:
My name is John G. Adney, and I am a new subscriber to this list. I live
in Marion, Iowa (next door to Cedar Rapids) and am a member of the Good
Earth Garden Club of Cedar Rapids.
I have gardened since my grandfather began to teach me at the age of 4.
I spent more than 40 years in the newspaper business (reporter, editor,
publisher) when this career was no longer fun. I thought it would be
nice to get paid to garden. I opened a freelance landscape design
business, then took a 2-year horticulture course at a local community
college, worked for two nursery/greenhouse companies, then began to run
a small perennial nursery. I also do garden writing and photography;
articles have appeared in a few national publications and a newspaper.
Arthritis has slowed me down (2 hip replacements) and I no longer run my
nursery on a full-time basis, though I still do sell some plants by word
of mouth. My wife Pat is the practical gardener: she grows the
vegetables.
My passions are hosta, daylily and shrub and old-fashioned roses, though
I grow quite a few other perennials in my borders. I've gardened indoors
for years, on sills and under lights. My hope is to build a small
greenhouse or else really expand the light setup to cover most of one
decent-sized basement room (now a combination grow-place and workshop).
Will e-mail anyone interested in indoor gardening -- outdoors, too.
John G. Adney
