Re: Squirrels!

Kris-
I too grow everything on the side of the house next to the garage. My
raised bed is 44" wide and 32' long. I have problems with voles and
gophers. They unearth newly planted seedlings and seeds. To discourage
their antics-which i do not think are cute-I use a variety of techniques.
I sprinkle garlic powder right on the bed around the plants after watering.
The same with ground or drushed red pepper, and thin sliced onion. I have
used mothballs around the perimeter of the bed placed about 4" apart. They
disolve slowly with the rain and watering but usually do the trick. If you
have children-make efforts to keep them away. Mothballs are toxic. I do
not know about the blood meal-it is the same as dried blood and is also a
good slow release form of nitrogen for your plants. I imagine I would
either sprinke it around the plants or a line to create a boarder where you
don't want the squirrels. You can try any/all of these methods AND invest
in alot of sunflower seed or peanuts and put a feeder away far from the
garden just for the squirrels. This will discourage them from the garden
and keep them busy with something else. Good luck and good gardening!
