For all the people what are trying to get off this list--it helps if you saved the
first message you got from the indoor-gardening list, and it helps a LOT if you
read it, in particular item 5 of Guidelines and Technical Notes.

Welcome to Indoor-Gardening!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The indoor-gardening e-mail discussion list was formed in order
to offer a discussion forum which would address the specific
interests and information needs of indoor gardeners.
Who is the indoor gardener? An indoor gardener is anyone who has
taken that important step from simply owning a collection of
houseplants (usually with high turnover) to realizing that "a
green thumb is all in your mind" and that learning about
houseplants is the single best way to stop killing them.
Successful indoor gardening, even more than outdoor gardening,
relies on the knowledge and expertise of the gardener. When we
bring plants indoors, we are taking control of everything in
their environment: light intensity and duration, water, soil,
nutrients, temperature, humidity, air quality and movement. We
sometimes take things even further, controlling daylength,
forcing dormancy (or making them listen to particular
composers...) We bring plants into our homes from the jungles,
the deserts, the forests, the meadows and the mountains of the
world. The time and effort we take to learn about their origins,
their habitat, and their growing requirements will be rewarded as
they flourish in our care.
Discussions on indoor-gardening encompass the following:
* growing plants indoors under natural or artificial light
* indoor plants of all kinds (houseplants, tropicals)
foliage and flowering plants, as well as herbs and
vegetables
* starting seeds indoors
* overwintering outdoor plants
* forcing bulbs
Discussions will cover many topics of interest to the indoor
gardener, among them:
* potting mixes * fertilizers * light requirements *
* problem diagnosis * propagation techniques *
* pest management and control * containers and displays *
* books * catalogs * Internet resources *
and, of course, plants.
Although questions at all levels are welcome, we do encourage you
to check available resources and FAQs before posting basic
questions. Visit The Sunroom at The Garden Gate, the homepage
for the indoor-gardening mailing list, for a collection of online
information of interest to indoor gardeners.

We eventually hope to begin an archive and FAQ for indoor
gardening. Please e-mail list owner Karen Fletcher at
fletcher@prairienet.org if you are interested in participating in
FAQ construction and maintenance.
