Hello Pete,
There is no such thing as a right way to make philodendron cuttings.
Just chop a runner off anywhere. Dip it Rootone-F. Put it in a glass of
water and watch it develop roots. The same process will work for spider
plants, but only try to root healthy beginning to make root-bud offshoots
that have been freshly cut.
