Plant I can't indentify

I hope someone can help me identify this plant. I have searched the
Virtual Garden (time life), all my plant books at home and several other
net sites but just couldn't find it. Here's the description.

It bears only one stem and the sword-like leaves encircle the stem as to
cover it completely. The leaves are fleshy but not succulent like. They
are green and the underside turns purple with age. All new growth is
green. Thes stems also get a purple-ish tint to them with age. The plant
produces plantlets at the base of the plant but sometimes directly on
the stem craddled at the base of a leaf. At first, I thought it was a
baby dracaena because the growth is similar (not considering the
pantlets). It looks a bit like dracaena sanderiana (ribbon plant) or
cordyline but the leaves are larger (iI think) and all green. The plant
measures about 1 1/2ft (but I don't know how old it is so this might not
be helpful, it grows like crazy), the bottom (mature) leaves are about
7-8in long and 2in wide. The mature leaves don't seem to be getting any
longer with age, the plant all grows in height it would seem. I need to
cut it back but am scared this will kill it. It doesn't seem like the
type of plant that would get bushy by pruning. I wish I could send a
picture.
Please help me, I must find it's name to be able to take proper care of
it.
Any help would be appreciated even if you're not sure of a the name or
family that belongs to this plant send it in anyways. I'll do the
research.
Thanx!
Helga
