Scale problems

Hi everyone,

I live in Pensacola and I've lurked on this list for awhile. I love
plants and indoor gardening especially. I just bought 3 big Areca Palms
from Lowe's and of course, they are infested with scale. Unless Palms
are supposed to have little brown specks all over the trunks that I can
scrape off with my fingernail. But what is the best way to handle
this?? The palms look very healthy- no brown tips or yellowing leaves
anywhere and new growth on each plant- so I want to take the least
violent and disruptive course for them. I've read that denatured
alcohol is deadly to scale and I could perhaps treat them all to a q-tip
cocktail :). Has anyone used that method before? I've also found
little white creatures on my new Fabian Aralia. Will denatured alcohol
work on them too? Thanks for any advice. I'm not used to bug problems.

Kirsten
