fungus gnats and other pests

i have read that fungus gnats are mostly harmless, although they may be
annoying. in large numbers, they can eat some roots but mostly they feed
off the fungi growing on the surface of wet soils.

if you don't keep your soil too wet and let it dry out between waterings,
they will die off or move along. it worked for me.

i have a question re: another pest. in preparation for my spring ritual
of bringing plants out into my firescape, i need to find a safe, nontoxic
and harmless way of keeping those damn @#$%&* squirrels out of my plants.
they dig and destroy anything they can except my mammillaria cactus. is
there a safe and harmless spray that i can use to keep them away from my
plants? has anyone had any experience with hot pepper spray? please let
me know.
