I've pruned my ficus a few times (I'm not sure which kind it is, it has
long skinny leaves), and it actually seemed to like getting pruned, as
it always put out a bunch of new leaves about a week or so afterward.
I'm trying to keep mine at the height it is (about 4') because I just
don't have room for an honest-to-goodness *tree* in my apartment!
As for pot-bound plants, I know for sure that hoyas and African violets
like to be, and hoyas just won't bloom if they aren't. Also (and I'm
not 100% sure about this), I think spider plants like to be a bit pot-
bound too, because mine won't put out babies until they've been
in their pot a while. I have a really large one that's been in the same
plastic pot for 3 years now and it has over a dozen babies on it.
