Mealybugs

Hi David and List,

Mealybugs are a real pain...you ask "Or is the idea of being
entirely and permanently free of mealybugs just a foolish dream?" YES :-)

Personally I take great delight in spearing the perishing things
with the tip of a toothpick. Seriously though...the young bug...s are
wrapped in that cottonwool like bundle you see on your plants, dabbing with
methylated spirits (alcohol) cleans off their waxy protection, leaving them
open to recieve either a systemic insecticide or a spray of soap and water.
The young are often *just* below the level of the soil, so washing the
roots is a good idea, and also gets rid of any root mealies you (or the
plant!) may be harbouring. If the plant is too big to wash, try a soak of
systemic (Tumblebug is the one I use), using the same mixing proportions as
you would a spray.

I have always had mealy bugs on my extensive cactii collection,
but keep them under control using all the above methods. Removing the
adults by stabbing them really does work, and gives you a great feeling of
satisfaction! (Just make sure you don't progress to ripping wings off flies
...)

Liz Bradbury, in a cold wet Scotland.
