Hi!
I think you can get rid of slugs using beer. You place a few shallow jar lids of beer out on the ground, they crawl in, drink,
die, drown, something...my friend who grows strawberries uses this, and it supposedly works.
Here's some other info I got from the Better Homes and Garden's site on their Q&A on gardening pests, from another one of their
readers:

I have a relatively new garden too (this is actually going into its second season) and have found that my hostas were the target
of some hungry slugs. I was so depressed to see new holes in the baby hostas each day! Then I received the new Smith & Hawkens
catalog -- they have a product called a "Snailer" (about $10.00 each)that traps slugs by attracting them to it with snail and
slug bait. The snails and slugs slither up the sides, go inside to feast but can't escape (but I think a few might have). But
however many you trap it's that much less in your garden. The Snailer is about 12 inches long, 6 inches wide, green in color
with a holding area inside for the bait (a special powder you mix with water to make the bait). It comes with complete easy
instructions. Smith & Hawkens also have a smaller product I think called the "slug hut," (runs about $7.00 each) but they were
out of those as the time of my purchase.
Hope this info helps..happy gardening!
