Diatomaceous (?!!!?) earth is supposed to get rid of slugs and be harmless
to other things (unless they slither, I guess). Diatomaceous earth is the
crushed up shells of diatoms (I don't remember what they are) that
aparently are really sharp (relatively speaking--it looks like a powder to
me). When the slugs crawl across it it cuts up their undersides (not to
put too fine a point on it) and they die. Or so the book that I read about
how to get rid of slugs said.
