I think Abutilons need several hours of direct sunlight, and you're right,
they do dry out very quickly.  Perhaps they need to be repotted into larger
pots.  The trouble with that is they will then grow larger. :-(.  Perhaps
the best thing is to periodically take cuttings and when they begin to
bloom, discard the old plant.
