Dear Kris:
Ignore the squirrels and chipmunks. Today I noticed that a squirrel
harvested a patch of mushrooms that grew along a perennial bed and laid the
mushrooms on a log to dry. Leave them be and they'll schedule their own
activities.
I always plant a currant tomato that the squirrels and chipmunks claim as
their own. With their own tomato plant they seem to ignore the big main
crop types.
If your critters get into your strawberry patch you should build a screen
around the berries. But who can resist perfect ripe strawberries.
When I scatter buckwheat for a green manure crop there is always extra for
the fellows who seem to find it irresistible. Later buckwheat starts
growing from places favored by them like rocks and stumps. I even have a
Doug Fir trunk with buckwheat growing ten feet high.
You've got to figure out how to live with them. If you kill these
particular animals more will move into the area.
Best, Vicki
