Re: Kalanchoe Help?
Hi Kathleen
The advice Jacky gave you is very good. The reason why they tag it as an annual
is because most people treat them that way. They discard them after they've
flowered. This also promotes the market. If people don't know they can keep
them, they'll throw them out and buy new ones. Definately money to be made here
: )
Kalanchoe can be kept for a number of years and can re-flower more than once a
year. In theory, it only needs a months rest after flowering. Cut off all dead
flowers and flower stalks and keep it dry for about a month. Then you have two
schools. Some people say to give it lots of light during the rest period but
some say to give it partial shade and then change it to a sunny spot once the
rest period is over. (perhaps some kalanchoe expert on this list could clear
things up a little). Once the rest period is over just water more liberally and
give it plenty of sunshine.
And even if it doesn't re-flower, I find the plant itself to be very attractive
with age. It gets nice, big and bushy : ) (but flowers are a bonus!)
Good-luck, Helga
