Dear Friends,
Things in Wichita and at the Glassehouse are slowly but surely returning to
normal. Most of the folks who work for us and who had family in the storm,
are back at work today and their families have been given new temporary
shelter and will be all right, as well as can be expected under the
conditions of losing one's home and everything they owned and had.
I had two families living with me for two days and they now are gone and with
other friends and family in the area. One family is in a motel being
provided free by the motel owners. Things here are a bit quieter and more
normal. I will be in the greenhouses all day today for the first time since
the tornado. It will be good, I think. I still give great thanks that my
greenhouses, home and property were spared again this time after two tornados
in a month's time.
Thank you to all of you, once again, for your thoughtfulness and kind words
expressed in so many ways. They were all appreciated and passed on to our
staff and their families. Vice President Gore was in Wichita and Haysville
yesterday as I'm sure you saw on television and heard on the radio. Funds
are being made available to those needing help and as near as we can tell,
they are getting the money right away so they can start restoring their lives.
On the bright side, "You should see our collection of achimenes! Many have
begun to bloom are spectacular! I was up on a ladder in one of the
greenhouses early this morning and for the first time saw a full flat of
Achimenes flava in radiant bloom! It was gorgeous. All those tiny but
beautiful little yellow blossoms! It was a pick me up for sure!" The
weather here is fabulous! Full sun each day and only in the upper 60's or
lower 70's. Couldn't be any better. Two weeks ago, the time of the tornado,
we had had rain day and night for two full weeks. That was more than enough.
Warmest greetings to all.
Jim McKinney, McKinney's Glassehouse in Wichita, Kansas
