Mould?

Hi to Everyone,

I joined this list ages ago and introduced myself at that time, and have
been enjoying the discussions and tips.  

But now I have a question:  I live in Jamaica, West Indies, which I
think equates to zone 10.  A week ago I gave my plants a thorough
watering.  In the last few days I've noticed that the soil has become
white in areas, looking like calcium deposits.  Does anyone have any
idea why this is happening?  Is it harmful?
