Cool nights, 12-hour days and O2

I've been developing an inferiority complex listening to all of you talk
about all these exotic botanical guests sharing your homes with you! :)
I have been calling upon some of the more common species of our little
green friends, the usual Target or Wal Mart specials, such as spider
plants, rhododendron, etc. with a much more pragmatic underlying motive.
While I adore the aesthetic beauty of all plants, I have created a large
rack with grow lights more for the purpose of plain old oxygen than as a
hobby or obsession. You see, we live in a polluted city and the only way we
can stand to close up the house to keep out the wafting fumes from some of
our industrial neighbors is by having lots of plants.
While we sleep, we have the grow light set to be on half the night.
(Otherwise we would be getting less oxygen rather than more, as plants use
oxygen when it's dark, right?) Thus the plants are getting two 12 hour days
instead of one 24. Seems to work for some of them.
Also, in Minnesota, our house temp goes down to 50 some nights. We can't
stand to have the heat on much while we sleep.
Anyone else "using" plants this way? Suggestions for maximum
oxygen-producing plants that could thrive in such cold, super-short days?
