Dormancy

I don't want my plants to die on me during the winter.  I am doing great 
considering this is my first time caring for plants and have had all of 
them alive 'til today, except for my Fittonia who is on the weak side.  
Anyway, should I buy artificial lights for the plants or would this alter 
their dormancy.  If I water them very little, would they dry out.  Are they 
supposed to sorta die then sprout during the spring?
