Propagation

I gave my Gardenia a little haircut and put the cuttings in a cup with 
water.  The leaves and stem dried out and my husband threw it out 
(GGGRRRR).  He said it was dead and ugly.  The bottom had black dots where 
I believe roots would come out of.  Am I doing this right?  I kept it in 
front of the window most of the times.
