Hi Claire,
Yes, mine was just a bare stump when I got it. I think it was a couple
months before I started seeing new growth. I don't know of any way to
check for roots without disturbing it (although I don't know if gently
lifting it to see if there is any resistance would do it any harm). As
long as it's still solid it should be OK. I bought 3 at the same time.
After several months of no evidence of new growth, one got soft and I
threw it away.
